Randi Ritvaldi, a former hardware programmer of Gathotkaca (the payload team), shared his work experience with Gadjah Mada Aerospace Team. After a year of teamwork, he became a team leader at GMAT in 2014-2015. Initially, Randi joined the GMAT to fill his spare time, apply his knowledge in real life, and be inspired by the previous year’s GMAT accomplishments. The following year, he was even more motivated to bring the GMAT to the top.

He told about the fellowship in the team, after he came home from college, he often stayed in the workshop and almost every day gathered to prepare for the competition, college assignments were also done together. That’s the secret to compact GMAT.

He always hopes for the best for GMAT, remains enthusiastic in work because there are a lot of aerospace contests in the field of rockets. Maximize experiences and lessons while on the GMAT team. Sometimes friendship, networking between members and graduates, and learning can be far more valuable than competitions and championship titles. In addition to focusing on competitions, GMAT should initiate research so that results can be included in national and international conferences.

Gadjah Mada Aerospace Team kembali berkompetisi dalam ajang United States Annual Student CanSat Competition 2021 dan berhasil meraih peringkat 10 dunia dan peringkat 6 tim dari benua Asia. Kompetisi yang diselenggarakan oleh American Astronautical Society (AAS) tersebut, merupakan kompetisi yang rutin diadakan dengan misi berbeda setiap tahunnya. Pada tahun 2021 ini, CanSat Competition memiliki misi Autorotating Maple Seed Science, di mana setiap tim yang ikut berpartisipasi harus mampu menciptakan wahana muatan roket yang dapat mengirimkan data atmosfer dan separasi pada ketinggian tertentu.

GMAT yang diwakili oleh divisi internasional, Narantaka, harus melalui rangkaian seleksi ketat sebelum akhirnya berhasil menuju babak final. Narantaka berhasil menyalip ratusan tim lainnya yang dimulai tahap Registrasi dan Preliminary Design Review (PDR) hingga akhirnya memporoleh peringkat ke-11 dari 41 dan berhasil maju ke tahap final yang diawali dengan Critical Design Review (CDR).

CanSat Competition 2021 ini cukup unik dari tahun sebelumnya karena sempat terhambat adanya pandemi yang mengakibatkan pengunduran kegiatan yang cukup lama. Oleh sebab itu, CanSat Competition 2021 digelar secara daring dari tahap awal hingga tahap akhir. Segala pengerjaan lomba juga dilakukan dengan tetap mematuhi protokol kesehatan yang berlaku. Adanya keterbatasan ini tidak lantas membuat tim GMAT patah semangat. Hal ini, justru telah menghantarkan Tim Narantaka meraih prestasinya.

Puncak acara pengumuman partisipan dilaksanakan pada Selasa, 22 Juni 2021 merupakan puncak acara  oleh Jim Way, Executive Director American Astronautical Society, yang sebelumnya didahului ucapan ucapan terima kasih kepada pihak juri dan pihak sponsor, dan dilanjutkan dengan pemaparan singkat dari keynote speaker, yaitu Sandra Magnus, Ph.D, mantan Executive Director American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) yang telah terbang dalam 3 misi luar angkasa.

Dalam meraih prestasi yang mengharumkan alamameter tercinta, Narantaka beranggotakan Atha Layana Hibatullah, Muhammad Nur Ilmi, Faizal Nurrahman Heryanto, Dimas Sofian Ashari, Rafly Rayyaan Prawiratama, Diazka Meidy, Victoria Trinita Pardede, Gabriel Bayunanda Pinaringan, dan Cendy Caesarianty dengan bimbingan Bapak Catur Atmaji, S.Si., M.Cs. dan Bapak Dr. I Made Miasa, S.T., M.Sc yang ikut berperan aktif dalam memberikan masukan dan saran kepada tim selama rangkaian kompetisi berlangsung.

Dibalik prestasi yang telah diukir, tim GMAT telah memulai riset dan pengembangan wahana secara fisik dari tahun 2020 agar lebih siap dalam mengikuti kompetisi. Pengembangan wahana dilakukan melalui beberapa tahap seperti desain, pemilihan material, manufaktur, serta beberapa uji kelayakan dan uji fungsional pada prototype wahana hingga dihasilkan wahana fungsional yang mampu menyelesaikan misi dengan baik.

Tim GMAT juga tiak lupa melakukan evaluasi terhadap proses dan hasil yang telah dilalui pada kompetisi tahun ini. Dengan evaluasi tersebut, diharapkan GMAT dapat terus berkembang pada kompetisi berikutnya untuk mengharumkan nama almamater tercinta.

Bagas Azhar, a former Mechanic of Maheswara (the balloon team), shared his experience working in Gadjah Mada Aerospace Team. In the beginning, he wanted to join the rocket team as a mechanic. But after joining GMAT, he realized that he didn’t really want to be a part of the rocket team. Instead, he was glad to be a part of the balloon team which allowed him to experience something different.

Bagas decided to join GMAT because he wanted to have organizational experience. He believed joining other competition teams in University would take too much of his time which in his opinion wasn’t really worth it compared to what would be obtained by joining it. Because basically, he was mainly looking for organizational experience.

The most memorable thing for him as a part of GMAT was during the trial and during the competition. Since the competition was located near the beach, it was an exciting experience for him to be able to stroll around while testing the antenna and enjoy the beach. Even the competition itself was extremely exciting for him. Furthermore, the competition was held at dawn which allowed him to experience the beautiful view of Garut.
Bagas’ hope for GMAT today and in the future is to never stop innovating. Basically, people live because people are constantly thinking of new things. Winning is not everything, but winning is a real validation that we don’t stop innovating.

Being a part of GMAT brought a big impact on Bagas’ life. Since he’s having a career which is not in line with the educational background he has, organizational experience and the urge to continue learning are what brings him to this point. The key is to not think of learning as a burden, because in essence, life is learning.

The Atmosphere of Earth is divided into several different layers. The easiest way to think about the atmosphere above our planet is to imagine an invisible shield that protects our planet from all the bad stuff that floats around in the universe. Each layer has its own properties, depending on how far you are from the surface of the planet.

          1. Troposphere

This is the first and the lowest layer of Earth’s atmosphere. All life on this planet is affected by the changes that happen in this layer, as all the weather changes take place in the troposphere. It starts from the ground (or sea level) of our planet and expands up to 10 km up in the sky.

This is when we talk about the levels of oxygen, the one layer that contains the most of this gas every living thing on this planet needs. The higher we go in this layer of the atmosphere, the ‘’thinner’’ the air gets, meaning it is significantly harder for us humans to breathe. That is why climbing high mountain peaks is so challenging!

          2. Stratosphere

If we start from the top of the troposphere and go further into the sky, we reach the layer known as the stratosphere. This layer goes up around 50 km above the Earth’s ground. In this layer, the temperature rises as you go further up, and it has something to do with the ozone layer that is found inside the stratosphere.

The ozone layer serves a vital role in the protection of our planet, as the molecules of ozone prevent ultraviolet light from the Sun to hit our planet without stopping. The UV light is not technically stopped, but the conversion from UV light to heat happens (which is why holes in the ozone layer are so dangerous).

          3. Mesosphere

As the name suggests, we are halfway up our atmosphere layers when we reach this part. The mesosphere goes up to 85 km above the surface of our planet, and the temperatures here behave as they do in the troposphere. In essence, the higher you go, the colder it gets. The air in this layer is absolutely not friendly for us, as it would be impossible to breathe in the mesosphere because of too low oxygen levels. Also, this layer of the atmosphere has the lowest temperature of all layers, and they drop down to -90° C.

          4. Thermosphere

The layer that is located between 500 and 1000 km above the Earth’s level is known as the thermosphere. You have guessed it, high temperatures are the name of the game here. This layer is under constant attack from the X-rays and UV radiation coming from the Sun and the space around us. Because of this, the temperatures in this layer can even reach 2,000° C!

          5. Exosphere

Unlike other layers, which are mostly distinguishable from one another, it is hard to say how far the exosphere is from the surface of the planet. Somewhere it is around 100,000 km, but it can expand up to 190,000 km above sea level. The air here is extremely thin, and the conditions here are more similar to the ones we find when we leave the Earth’s atmosphere entirely.

SERAH TERIMA JABATAN GADJAH MADA AEROSPACE TEAM 2019/2020

1 tahun telah berlalu, Gadjah Mada Aerospace Team yang di pimpin M. Afif Aryandana telah berhasil memperoleh hasil positif pada perlombaan nasional dan internasional. Banyak penghargaan telah diperoleh serta telah mampu mengharumkan nama UGM dan Indonesia di kancah internasional.

Pada hari Kamis tanggal 14 November 2019, Gadjah Mada Aerospace Team mendapat wajah baru, ditandai dengan serah terima jabatan oleh ketua Gadjah Mada Aerospace Team periode  2018/2019, M. Afif Aryadana kepada ketua Gadjah Mada Aerospace Team yang baru periode 2019/2020, Bayu Hidayat. Acara berlangsung Di Koki Joni Seturan yang dihadiri oleh anggota GMAT dan dosen-dosen pembimbing GMAT.

Sebelum serah terima jabatan dimulai, ada beberapa serangkaian acara yang tidak kalah penting untuk diikuti. Dimulai pada jam 18.00, dilaksanakan makan malam Bersama untuk meningkatkan keakraban sesame anggota GMAT. Dilanjutkan dengan pembukaan acara oleh Mohamad Syaiful Huda & Luthfan Hadi Hilsan selaku MC pada acara kali ini, diteruskan oleh sambutan dari dosen-dosen pembimbing GMAT yang membicarakan tentang prestasi-prestasi yang telah diterima serta memberi kesan pada kepengurusan periode sebelumnya. Acara berikutnya adalah sambutan dari ketua GMAT periode 2018/2019, M. Afif Aryandana. Ia mengucapkan terima kasih kepada seluruh anggota GMAT karena telah bekerja keras untuk meraih yang terbaik dan berharap kedepannya GMAT dapat menjadi lebih baik lagi dalam membentangkan sayapnya baik di kancah nasional maupun internasional. Tidak hanya itu, Faiz Y C juga ikut memberikan kesanya selama periode 2018/2019 ini,

Berlanjut dengan acara puncak, yaitu Penyerahan jabatan yang dilakukan secara simbolik dengan penyerahan roket GMAT dari ketua periode sebelumnya kepada ketua periode 2019/2020. Dengan penyerahan roket ini maka telah diresmikan :

Dengan ini, Gadjah Mada Aerospace Team kembali siap membentangkan sayapnya di Indonesia dan dunia Internasional.

Pada hari Senin tanggal 27 Oktober 2018, telah terlaksana serah terima jabatan oleh ketua Gadjah Mada Aerospace Team periode 2017/2018, Ratya Rama Prabaswara kepada ketua Gadjah Mada Aerospace Team periode 2018/2019, M Afif Aryandana. Acara berlangsung di Koki Joni Seturan yang dihadiri oleh anggota GMAT serta Bapak Iswandi, S.T., M.Eng dan Bapak Catur Atmaji, S,Si., M.Cs. selaku dosen pembimbing GMAT.

Sebelum acara serah terima jabatan dimulai, dilaksanakan makan malam bersama untuk meningkatkan keakraban antar anggota GMAT. Acara dimulai pada jam 19.00 yang diawali dengan pembukaan, oleh Naufal Gugus P sebagai MC pada acara sertijab kali ini. Setelah pembukaan oleh MC dilanjutkan sambutan oleh Bapak Catur dan Bapak Iswandi. Acara berikutnya adalah sambutan dari ketua periode sebelumnya tentang harapan bahwa ketua periode yang baru dapat memberikan GMAT menjadi juara 1 dan dilanjutkan dengan serah terima jabatan. Penyerahan jabatan dilakukan secara simbolik dengan menyematkan jaket GMAT dari ketua periode sebelumnya kepada ketua periode 2018/2019. Dengan disematkannya jaket GMAT maka telah diresmikan :
